A Farrell High School sophomore has raised enough money to attend a medical camp this summer at UCLA.
"I was happy about the response," said Kameron Greene, who needed the money by Friday. "People who didn't even know me donated to me."
Kameron received donations as small as $1 and as large as $500 from 31 people to top the $2,046 he needed for tuition to the camp, which is offered by the National Youth Leadership Forum.
Kameron, 15, of Farrell, said he thought the goal was out of his reach.
"I was really having second thoughts about it," he said. "I had very little time."
By mid-January, he had only $170.
Kameron has always been interested in the medical profession and wants to be a doctor specializing in internal medicine or heart care. His grandmother, Margaret Hughey, with whom he lives, is a former nurse.
He was nominated for the camp by his eighth-grade math teacher, Joyce Cannone, for his academic performance, leadership potential and intent to pursue a career in medicine.
The camp, which will run June 22-July 1, covers education requirements, career opportunities, clinical practice and ethical and legal issues.
"I'm very excited," he said. "This will be an experience I'll never forget."
