For a day, the Shenango Valley Senior Center, Hermitage, will be hoping to attract people of all ages to enter its doors.

The occasion will be "A Day With the Experts," a May 22 health fair with health screenings, speakers and fitness classes.

While the center caters to the senior crowd, Director Floy Moreira said she has been looking for ways to get younger people into the center.

"We're trying to do more and more for all ages," she said. "There are a lot of people under 60 who would be interested in our programs. They are our future."

Two of the speakers will talk about a subject that generally appeals more to a younger crowd: Sports.

Dr. Freddie H. Fu, chairman of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine's Orthopedic Surgery Department, will discuss "Interesting Insights in Sports Medicine" at 3:30 p.m. Fu is the head team physician for the university and has treated members of Pittsburgh's professional sports teams.

Dr. Richard S. Richards, an orthopedic surgeon with UPMC Horizon, will speak on "Common High School Athletic Injuries, Diagnosis and Treatment" at 2:45 p.m.

Former Pittsburgh Steeler Jon Kolb, who works for Specialty Orthopedics Rehabilitation Center, will talk about "Training Movement, Not Muscle" at 2 p.m.

The health fair, which will run from 12:30 to 6 p.m., is a collaborative effort between the center, Primary Health Network and Dr. John P. Balko.

Jane Vasconi, who handles special projects for Balko, was already planning a senior health fair when she approached Ms. Moreira. The pair decided to combine their efforts and expand their focus.

Balko will man his hearing testing mobile unit and will be available to talk about the diabetic shoe program and offer bone density screenings.

Other screenings offered will include balance, blood pressure, foot problems, glaucoma, macular degeneration, strength, heart rate, vision, bone density, blood oxygen levels, stress and cataracts.

"These is no reason you can't get up here and get any kind of screening you want," said Bonnie Dickson, outreach program coordinator for Primary Health.

Joni Laeng of Primary Health will teach yoga at 12:30, and Corie Komarc, exercise physiologist with Personal Fitness Center, will present a balance exercise program at 12:50.

Hermitage Fire Department will have a truck available and groups ranging from Mercer County Area Agency on Aging and American Red Cross to area nursing homes and care centers and the F.H. Buhl Club will provide information on their programs.

Kathy Gracenin will demonstrate energy choreography at 1:10 p.m., and Nick Gracenin will present an introduction to Tai Chi at 1:30.

May is Better Hearing and Speech Month and Senior Month.

Agencies interested in participating in the health fair can contact Ms. Moreira at (724) 981-7950.
