Logging scam nets Kinsman man prison time

A Kinsman man police say conned some Amish loggers out of thousands of dollars pleaded guilty to two counts of forgery Monday and was sentenced to 8 months in prison.

Trumbull County Judge Peter Kontos sentenced Timothy Grimes, 34, to two 8-month prison sentences, which will run concurrently.

Grimes was arrested in early February by Trumbull County Sheriff detective Rick Tackett.

Police in Hubbard Township said Grimes cheated two groups of Amish loggers out of more than $30,000.

Grimes, an ex-convict who has served time in prison in Ohio on charges of forgery and possession of drugs, initially faced two counts of theft and two of forgery, but the theft charges were dropped in exchange for his plea.

Police detective Sgt. Mike Begeot said Grimes signed contracts with the loggers to work on properties that do not belong to him.

In one instance, Amish loggers paid Grimes about $13,000 to log trees on a wooded lot off of Fox North Road.

Grimes targeted another group of Amish loggers by selling them logging rights to property owned by Midwest Steel near Interstate 80.
