face leukemia ordeal

A Hempfield Township girl and her family are hoping to help other people get through a terrible ordeal that they went through themselves.

Six-year-old Kristen Lumley has just finished over two years of treatments for acute lymphocitic leukemia.

Kristen had leg pain along with a respiratory virus that wouldn't clear up, which were the indicators that there was a problem, Rhonda Lumley, Kristen's mother, said. "Kids shouldn't have pain," she said.

"I would get so tired," Kristen said.

Kristen was diagnosed with leukemia on April 13, 2001, and immediately spent 10 days in Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh, Mrs. Lumley said.

Kristen said everything was scary for her. "Every day I would say, 'I want to go home. I want to go home.' ''

After her hospital stay, Kristen continued to have outpatient chemotherapy and had to undergo spinal taps every three months, Mrs. Lumley said.

June 12 was Kristen's last chemotherapy treatment. "She's completely leukemia free," her mother said.
