The environment in the community room of Lavigne Manor in Farrell was imbued with the spirit of giving, holiday songs and the aroma of good home cooking Tuesday afternoon.

Residents of Southwest Gardens Economic Development Corp.'s Ark and Unity houses in Farrell turned out in force to celebrate the season at Mercer County's Helping People with Disabilities advocacy group's sixth annual Christmas party.

Dottie Sims, HPD adviser, served as mistress of ceremonies for the gala.

Several manor residents attended the luncheon and brought gifts for the eight children of Ark House as well as supplies for the adult residents of both houses.

Ark House provides shelter, food and other necessities for homeless women and children in the county, while Unity House provides the same services for men.

"Each year, HPD has decided to be a blessing to someone else," Ms. Sims said. "It's important that you understand that we embrace everybody."

Shouts of "Amen" came from throughout the room as Ms. Sims spoke.

In previous years, HPD handed out gifts to both adults and children who reside in the houses, but this year, organizers decided to give supplies to the adults and gifts to the children.
