ANOTHER 7 WILL CLOSE REGULAR SEASONS TONIGHT

While seven area football teams will embark on district playoffs this weekend, seven others will wrap up their regular seasons tonight.

The only local squad squaring off in playoff action tonight is the Sharon Tigers, who face Mercyhurst Prep in District 10 Class AA semifinal action.

Meanwhile, the other half-dozen teams open their playoff runs on Saturday.

In D-10 AAA play, Greenville meets Harbor Creek and Wilmington battles Titusville.

In D-10 A action, Kennedy Christian plays virtual host to Linesville, while Sharpsville meets Union City.

In WPIAL Class A competition, Farrell travels to Oakmont to meet Riverview.

And in Ohio, Hubbard hosts Kenston in Division III Region 9 play.

See accompanying playoff boxes for a glance at all the playoff matchups.

Leading the non-playoff teams is West Middlesex, which looks to cap its strong but bittersweet season by becoming the first Big Reds team since 1985 and only the second since football was restarted at the school in 1964 to bag eight wins in a season.

The only local head-to-head action pits a pair of struggling teams as Lakeview travels to Mercer for the finale of the teams with combined 1-17 records.

Following are game reports:

  • West Middlesex (7-2) at Moniteau -- After coming up short in a thrilling race for the top spot in MCAC Class A, the Big Reds must settle for a chance at an impressive 8-2 finish instead of a postseason visit.

After last week's loss to Kennedy, the Big Reds will nonetheless enter the final week of their season with one of the area's top team defense, yielding 151.8 yards per game, while ranking fourth in scoring defense (10.8 ppg.).

WM quarterback Chad Fette remains the area's No. 4 rusher with 1,137 yards and 17 TDs. QB Jake Buzard broke the 1,000-yard passing plateau last week.

  • Lakeview (1-8) at Mercer (0-9) -- The surprising Sailors manufactured a 23-0 shutout over fellow FCVC cellar-dweller Saegertown.

The Mustangs' offense did overcome their personal scoring nightmare by breaking the plane of the end zone for the first time all season last week while being handled by Grove City, 54-7.

  • Oil City (5-4) at Grove City (1-8) -- The Eagles will have a tough time ending the season with back-to-back wins.

The Oilers are led by QB Brandon Hall, who has tossed six TDs on 549 yards and RB Siembida, who is nearing the 1,000-yard club with 803 rushing yards and 10 TDs.

For Grove City, QB Chad Pratt tossed his third TD pass of the year last Friday against Mercer.

He needs 87 yards through the air tonight to break 500 for the season.

  • Franklin (4-5) at Slippery Rock (4-5) -- The Rockets endured a big loss from the Sharon Tigers, although they did streak to an early 14-8 lead, a week ago, and tonight look to finish the season at .500 with a win over a Franklin team currently standing in fifth in the Northwest Conference.

For the Rockets, RB Josh Kneiss will need a big night to win the local scoring race, as he currently rests in third place with his 25 TDs.

He should sew up the local rushing title, and with his better than 1,700 yards, another 300-yard game could land him in the exclusive 2,000-yard club.

Franklin is paced by QB Hall's 731 passing yards and six TDs, good for fourth in the NWC.

WR Horne has 21 grabs for 406 yards.

  • Meadville (1-8) at Hickory (5-4) -- The Hornets, after starting with seemingly good playoff potential, will still manage a winning record if they can best a Bulldogs squad that has been beaten up for most of the season.

RB Quentin Peagler should overcome the 1,000 hurdle, as he enters tonight's contest with 983 yards on 158 carries (6.2 ypc.).

Peagler added a TD in last week's win to boost his season total to 14.

The latest team to best the Bulldogs was Brookville, which held on for a 15-12 win last week.

  • Erie East (1-8) at Reynolds (3-6) -- They won't come close to a winning record this season, but the Raiders beat the teams they were supposed to in 2000, and may well tack on one more in their finale in Transfer against a hapless East team.

QB Tom McEntire will finish an impressive season, currently ranked sixth among local passers with 456 yards. RB Deacon Jones enters the game with 545 on 130 carries.

East surprisingly boasts the top passer in the NWC, as Joe Slomski has thrown for 1,201 yards and nine TDs, but has been marred with 15 interceptions.

East came into last week's game with Titusville having beaten only Meadville, a 26-0 shutout on Sept. 15. RB Kevin Klino led the East rushing attack coming into last week with 346 yards on 43 trips.
