GCC has mix of youth, experience

After graduating seven of eight '95 All-Presidents' Athletic Conference performers, the Grove City College football team will look to a mix of experience and youth to stay in the hunt in '96.

On offense, four starters return for 13th-year head coach Chris Smith (41-66-2) to the Wolverines' Delaware Wing-T, now in its second year, and three of the four are on the line, including senior tackles Josh Dunn (6-2, 255) and Dan Levenduski (6-0, 230). In the backfield, junior fullback Doug Steiner (5-8, 190) tops the list of returnees after posting a team-best 5.8 yards per carry average.

The vacant quarterback spot could be filled by last year's backup signal-caller, junior Jeff Porter (6-0, 185), who completed 10 of 21 passes for 133 yards in five appearances. Defensively, the Wolverines return six starters from last season's 2-8 overall (1-3 PAC) squad.

A quartet of Mercer County products are listed on the Wolverines' pre-season roster, including junior split end Walter Bestwick (6-0, 185), a Grove City High School graduate; freshman offensive lineman Jim Bumbarger (6-5, 270), a George Junior Republic product, and Wilmington High School alumni Chuck and James Dworek. Chuck is a 5-10, 175-pound junior halfback; James a 6-1, 170-pound freshman defensive back.

Former Pittsburgh Steelers All-NFL lineman and assistant coach Jon Kolb begins his first season as defensive coordinator after serving as linebacker coach last year.

Also new to the staff is Mercer native Kelly Nan, the former Grove City High School mentor, who will work to solidify the Wolverines' defensive line.
