HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS

The Hammer gets nailed

By Ed Farrell
Herald Sports Writer

SHARON _ The irony was as blunt as a slap in the face.

Sharon's Tiger Stadium, site of one of Wilmington Area High School's greatest gridiron successes, also served as the site of one of its most heartbreaking disappointments.

Almost a month ago to the day following Wilmington's 27-7 Mercer County Athletic Conference- AA championship-clinching vic tory over Sharon, the Greyhounds were eliminated from the PIAA playoffs for the second straight season by Tyrone, this time by a 14-10 margin Saturday afternoon.

``You know the sad part of it is you only remember the last one, you know what I mean?'' Wilmington head coach Terry Verrelli said in a hushed tone of voice amid the stillness of the Greyhounds' dressing quarters.

``That's the part that's kinda depressing. It almost seems all else was for nothing, you know? And it isn't,'' Verrelli emphasized. ``But yet, that's what it seems.''

Wilmington's vaunted Hounds Hammer defensive unit had pitched nine shutouts in its first dozen games and surrendered only 21 points all season en route to MCAC and District 10 titles and the state western regional semifinals. In another ironic twist, the only game this season in which it allowed more than one score proved to be its lone loss.

The decisive Tyrone touchdown was a product of its own version of ``The Drive.''

Following Marcus Owens' interception of Todd Smargiasso's first-down pass from Tyrone's 41-yard line, the Golden Eagles embarked on a 14-play, 90-yard, 7-minute, 18-second drive that spanned the last 4:41 of the third period and the first 2 1/2 minutes of the fourth frame.

During the course of the march Tyrone would overcome a clipping penalty, twice convert 3rd-and-long situations, and ultimately, a 4th-and-5 play before Owens culminated the sequence with his eighth carry. On a 3rd-and-6 play from Wilmington's 10-yard line, Golden Eagles' quarterback Jarrod Anderson optioned right, then pitched to the trailing Owens who bounced it outside and dove headlong for the pylon. Luke Friday's second successful conversion kick capped the scoring with 9:31 remaining in the game.

Wilmington (12-1) ultimately would regain possession with 5:42 left and drive 56 yards in 10 plays. However, on 3rd-and-goal from the Tyrone 9-yard line, a Smargiasso fumble was recovered by the Golden Eagles' Cliff McElwain. It was Wilmington's fourth turnover of the contest and second time during the second half it failed to score in a goal-to-go situation.

``I don't know if there's a key,'' Tyrone head coach John Franco replied regarding his club's back-to-back wins over Wilmington. ``I think you have to have pretty good football players, because they're a great team. I think that's all there is to it.

``It was a heavyweight fight. Whoever was standing last was gonna win the game,'' Franco continued. ``And we survived it. You know, thank God there wasn't any more time on the clock. It just was a great game and I don't think there's any key in beating Wilmington. If you have good players. ... I think we have awfully good players and I think they have awfully good players and we both match up pretty well, I think.''

``They're an explosive team, also. I thought we did a good job defensively in holding 'em down,'' Verrelli said. ``But every once in a while, something happens where they click and they move the ball. They've got a good team, too.

``But the option, pitching the ball, was giving us some trouble and I think that's probably what hurt us the most tonight,'' Verrelli related, before again crediting his defense.

``I think, defensively, we just didn't move the ball well enough offensively to keep 'em off the field. They've got a good team over there; they're gonna eventually get in the end zone if you aren't moving the ball yourself. We moved it, but not well enough, you know what I mean?''

District 5-6 titlist Tyrone (12-0) commenced the contest with an 8-play, 65- yard drive that consumed 4:06, culminating in Owens' 9-yard 4th-and-3 run around left end at the 7:54 mark of the first frame. Highlighting the march were respective Anderson passes of 12 and 37 yards to Jeremy Larosa and Mark Wyland.

The Greyhounds responded with a 20-yard Wyatt Campbell field goal 1:20 into the second stanza. The score was set up when McElwain, in punt formation, was swarmed over by T.D. Mitcheltree when the former could not handle a low center snap, providing Wilmington with possession at Tyrone's 17-yard line. Campbell's kick trimmed Wilmington's deficit to 7-3.

On the second play from scrimmage following the ensuing kickoff, Demetrious Rich picked off an Anderson aerial and returned it 18 yards to the Tyrone 37-yard line.

Nine plays later, Smargiasso, on a 3rd-and-11 pass from the 16, split Golden Eagle defenders Owens and Matt Sharer with a laser in the right corner of the end zone that a sliding Shawn Bauer speared. Campbell's conversion afforded Wilmington its lone, and last, lead of the season, 10-7, with 5 1/2 minutes remaining to the intermission. There the score remained until Tyrone's decisive drive.

Wilmington's five second-half possessions ended, respectively, in a fumble, interception, punt, fumble and interception. During its dozen wins, Wilmington outscored foes by a 176-0 aggregate margin during the second half, including 47-0 during D-10 playoff wins over Eisenhower and Northwestern and the opening-round PIAA verdict over Redbank Valley.

The longer he spoke, the more painful the loss became for Verrelli as he referred to a club composed of 13 seniors.

``There's nothing you can; they don't

want to hear anything. They're disappointed and I didn't say much of anything, because I don't think this is the time to say anything. They don't want to hear anything and you've gotta be smart enough not to say anything right now.''

It was pointed out to the veteran Verrelli that his club was not firing on all cylinders against Tyrone, or for that matter in the last couple weeks. Linebacker T.J. Meese was lost for the duration when he injured a leg in the Sharon game; 816-yard rusher Sammy Koi was a non-entity on offense against Tryone after spraining a knee in last week's win, and Tekac's troublesome right shoulder flared early in the second half, limiting his offensive production to 23 yards rushing on only three carries and one 3-yard reception.

``I think it hurt us, obviously, especially the second half of the game,'' Verrelli asserted. ``Several of those guys were injured and proably shouldn't even have been playing but wanted to go back in and play. But, hey, you know, they're all tough games from here on out. We had our chances and sometimes you just come up short, that's all.

``But it's a great year,'' Verrelli assessed. ``It's just a difficult time when you lose. Obviously it was a tremendous year and we're proud of that. When there's games to be played, nobody wants to lose any of them.''

Notes: On the drive, Tyrone _ which will meet Aliquippa next weekend at a site and time to be announced _ converted a 3rd-and-17 on a 19-yard

Anderson-to-Andy Woomer pass; a 3rd-and-7 on an Anderson-to-Sharer pass, and a 4th-and-5 on an Anderson- to-Wyland pass when the latter surged ahead after apparently being stopped a yard shy of a first down. ``We made the plays,'' Franco said amid a crowd of midfield observers in explaining his club's win. ``Hey, you win games when players make great plays and I think we had quite a few of them tonight''... Verrelli's all-time ledger at Wilmington is now 115-76-3 in 18 seasons, seventh-best among teams in The Herald coverage area according to available Herald records.
