Farrell rolls to Final 4 SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. -- The Farrell Steelerettes continued their outstanding season Friday afternoon, sweeping their pool at the PIAA Class A girls volleyball championships. That sweep enabled the Steelerettes to advance to today's Final Four. Farrell (20-1), which has won five state championships under veteran coach Harriett Morrison, defeated Delone Catholic (15-7, 14-16, 15-6), Maplewood (15-4, 15-7) and Northeastern (15-2, 15-6) in Pool B action at Shippensburg University's Heiges Field House. ``We played real well,'' Morrison said. ``The seniors just rose to the occasion. This is their year and they took leadership on the floor.'' The three vanquished teams entered the state tourney with a combined 62-7 mark, including 23-0 by Northeastern. ``There were very few mistakes except in the second game against Delone,'' Morrison said. ``But we turned it around in the third game.'' The Steelerettes will face Pool A runner-up Conneaut Lake (24-2), the District 10 champion, in the semifinals at 9 a.m. today, with the championship match slated for noon. Farrell defeated the Lady Indians (16-14, 15-7) in regional play at Sharon last week. As for her squad's individual performances, Morrison said, ``We were well-balanced statistically and everybody contributed. It was just a super team effort.'' Leading that effort was team captain Lucretia Samuels, who posted a 25-kill, 30-dig, 3-block, 26-point line, prompting Morrison to say ``she was just dynamite today.'' Also contributing for Farrell were: Dorothy Smith, 39 assists, 24 digs, 2 blocks, 10 points; Sharanda Stinson, 19 kills, 41 assists, 11 digs, 3 blocks, 22 points; Nicole Scott, 28 kills, 1 assist, 23 digs, 3 blocks, 20 points; Kisha Pegues, 13 kills, 19 digs, 5 blocks, 9 points; Keturah Chambers 3 kills, 1 assist, 16 digs; Gina Falvo 19 digs, 17 points; and Erica Houston 2 digs. Shannock Valley (20-0), which defeated Farrell in the WPIAL finals, went 3-0 to win Pool A and will take on Pool B runner-up, Northeastern, in the other semifinal. |
