  • WEEK 10 PREVIEW
Brookfield seeking to clinch TAC-8 crown

    By Brad Isles
    Herald Assistant Sports Editor

While the attention of most local football fans will be focused on the opening night of the playoffs, there are several teams who didn't make the postseason and will be concluding their 1998 seasons.

Brookfield is one such team and the Warriors (4-1, 5-4) will be looking to wrap up the outright Trumbull Athletic Conference title with a victory over LaBrae (1-4, 3-6).

Both Newton Falls and Champion are 3-2 in the TAC-8 and have the opportunity to tie for the league title should they both win and Brookfield loses. In other games Friday it is:

    • Chaney (6-2) at Hubbard (4-5) -- The Cowboys can give Hubbard its first losing season since it went 3-7 in 1994. The Eagles are coming off a 26-22 loss to Newton Falls last week. It was the first time the Tigers beat Hubbard since 1990.

    • Moniteau (2-7) at West Middlesex (5-4) -- A victory by West Middlesex will give the Big Reds their first winning season since 1994 when they went 5-4. West Middlesex already has more wins this year than the last three combined (3). A sixth win would also be the most since the 1990 playoff team finished 7-4.

The school record of eight wins in a single-season was established by the 1985 squad that finished as tri-champions in the WPIAL's Tri-County North Conference.

    • Lakeview (2-7) at Mercer (1-8) -- Lakeview, with a win, can achieve more wins since they went 4-6 in 1994. The Mustangs are on a two game losing skid.

      SATURDAY

    • Hickory (4-5) at Warren JFK () -- The Hornets have the opportunity to finish the season with an even record under first-year coach Phil Annarella. A loss will give Hickory the same record it had last year, 4-6.

Warren JFK defeated Kennedy Christian earlier this season, 35-0.

    • Grove City (4-5) at Warren (5-4) -- Despite a late-season surge and winning their second-consecutive MCAC Class AAA title, the Eagles weren't selected to the D-10 postseason.
