1999 season preview Raiders are experienced
By Damon Avery "The kids are using last year as a catalyst to turn our program around," said Shoaff. "Obviously, we want to win football games. However, our main goal this season is to be a smarter more agressive football team." Shoaff understands the expectations of Reynolds supporters. However, his main concern is rebuilding a team back to the level of play the Raiders are accustomed to. "I'm not concerned about the pressure of winning football games," said Shoaff. "I am concerned with our team being fundamentally sound, and playing hard-nose football each week. "If we can do this, the wins will come. Our work ethic is a lot better and the kids are really pushing themselves to become better football players every day." One positive for the Raiders is the return of nine starters on both sides of the ball, led by senior linebacker Chad Geiger. Also, senior Lucas Fisher, noseguard, junior Willie Allison, linebacker, and sophmore Floyd "Deacon" Jones, defensive back, are expected to solidify the defense. Offensively, the Raiders are anchored by the line, which Shoaff hopes will enable his team to pound the football at opposing defenses. Leading the way in the trenches will be Fisher, Mike Jones, Dan Loughry, Justin Kern and Dan Palyo. "Offensively, I am pleased with our team's ability to run the ball in the middle at this point in the season," said Shoaff. "Defensively, we look strong up the middle and the secondary play is improving." Shoaff is entering his third season as the Raiders head coach and has a record of 2-17. Assistant coaches are: Frank Scarvel, Tim Scarvel, Dick Rickert, Jerry Pacifico, Mike Kilgore, Lonnie Emerick, and Bob Foust. |
