WEEK 1 PREVIEW
'King football' back in county By Brad Isles Herald Assistant Sports Editor Pennsylvania has some catching up to do. The 1999 high school football season kicks off tonight, at least in our commonwealth. Ohio already has one week of action under their belt, beginning play last Friday night. Local schools Brookfield and Hubbard each cruised to victories in their openers. The Eagles dismantled Cleveland's John Hay, 51-6, while the Warriors traveled north to do the same to Conneaut, 55-13. This week, teams from across Mercer County get in on the action, all in a quest to reach Hershey in 14 short weeks from now.
Reynolds hasn't scored a point in losing its last three meetings to Greenville, all while giving up 104 points. The Raiders' last victory over Greenville was a 14-13 win in 1995. Speaking of wins, the Raiders suffered through the programs first winless season last year, going 0-9. Greenville, on the other hand, looks to continue the success it's had over the past several seasons by making another run through the Northwest Conference. The Trojans also look to continue their dominance over Mercer County Athletic Conference squads. Greenville has an eight-game win streak against MCAC schools. Its last loss was to Sharon in the District 10 playoffs in 1995, 20-6.
For Kennedy Christian the biggest is whether or not they repeat last year's Cinderella run to the District 10 Class A title despite losing several key players to graduation. For Mercer the biggest question mark revolves around a plethora of young players, many of whom are taking the field for the first time.
The two met last season at Sharon with the Indians scoring a 20-6 victory.
Ursuline, meanwhile is already 1-0 at Stambaugh Stadium this season. The Fighting Irish started their season last week and won a thriller in overtime, 21-14, over the Irish of Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary. Josh Swogger, Ursuline's 6-5, 220-pound quarterback provided the winning margin on a QB sneak.
The Steelers' hopes rely on the legs and arm of second-team all-state quarterback J.J. Wilson, now a senior. Other key returnees include senior fullback-linebacker Frank Tamber and senior guard-defensive tackle Leon Smith. The Spartans return a key back in junior halfback Nick Paris (5-8, 150), a second-team all-conference pick last year.
Injuries during the preseason haven't helped, but Grove City returns nine starters on defense and several more letterwinners. It's a group that remembers last year's last-minute loss to the Bulldogs. The Eagles will be facing a young and inexperienced Meadville team. The team's leading rusher, Javar Manning, who gained over 4,000 career yards, graduated and is at Edinboro University. The most experienced returnee is Mike Kennedy at tailback who has all of 179 career yards.
Champion went to the air to score a victory in its opener last week. Quarterback Sean O'Malley threw a pair of aerial scores, including a 44-yard scoring strike to Dorian Shockey, to lead the Flashes past Ashtabula Harbor 28-0.
Coach Paul Piccirilli welcomes back a strong group of experienced players, many of whom have been a part of the Blue Devils' nine-game winning streak against French Creek Valley Conference schools. Their last loss was a 13-10 overtime setback to Cambridge Springs in the 1996 D-10 championship game. Linesville will be a big early test for Sharpsville. The Lions are favored to win the FCVC. They only lost four starters from last year and return senior quarterback Joe Hruska, senior fullback Pat Harakal and sophomore running back Dan Hruska. They comprised the FCVC's most productive offense last year and have outscored FCVC opponents 472-193 over the past two seasons Linesville hasn't won a non-conference game since 1989, but have played just one regular-season non-league game this decade -- last year's contest against the Blue Devils.
A key to the Big Reds' big season was a 3-0 start. Included in there was a 54-13 season-opening victory over the Lancers. Neshannock's top returnee is senior split end Mike Cubellis. He tied for the team lead in touchdowns with five.
In that game, the Colonels scored twice late in the game to steal the win and the Rockets are bent on revenge. Leading the way for the Rock will be third-year starting quarterback Greg Grupp.
Saegertown returns leading rusher Roger Grayson but gone are the starting quarterback, leading receiver and second leading rusher.
John Hay was no match for the Eagles last week as Hubbard built a 35-6 edge by halftime and cruised the rest of the way. Cleveland East topped Lorain Clearview last week, 18-14.
It might not be so easy this week, however. Girard used a 27-point first half to defeat rival Liberty, 27-6. Justin Smith, a 5-foot-5 running back, led the way with 188 yards on 18 totes.
