Several athletes at West Middlesex High displayed their versatility Monday night during the opening round of the boys' underclassmen bracket in the Sharon Lions Club-W.U. Hoyle Tournament of Champions.

Shortly after competing in an interscholastic baseball game, several Big Reds traded spikes for sneakers and led West Middlesex to a 72-55 rout of Commodore Perry at Sharon Senior High School.

Tim Van Buren poured in a team-leading 16 points, while Marc Bator and David Jennings evenly divided an additional 22 markers for West Middlesex, which led by a slender 25-20 halftime margin. In all, nine players contributed for the Big Reds.

Commodore Perry was led by Jason Williams' game-high 23-point performance, including 10-for-10 marksmanship from the free-throw line, while Eric Kerns contributed an additional 13 points.

Other results from Monday's boys' underclassmen opening round:

Mercer 56, Hickory 45

Mitch Berndt bucketed 17 points and Mike Dudek added 14 to pace Mercer, which led 22-21 at intermission. For Hickory, Marc Tiberia tossed in a dozen.

Pizza Joe's 64, Venango Christian 41

Mohawk, sponsored by Pizza Joe's, built a 27-18 halftime lead, then coasted during the second half as David Sorbo's game-high 18 points, including two treys, led 11 players into the scoring column. Charles Baschnagel's nine points led the Vikings.

Slippery Rock 63, Sharpsville 47

Adam Zajac and Nathan Lambert tallied 16 and 14 points, respectively, to lead the Rockets, who featured nine scorers.

Sharpsville, which trailed 27-18 at intermission, was led by Brad Watson's 13 markers.
