JOTS romps in Open Division

Open Division play commenced Wednesday night in the Sharon Lions Club-W.U. Hoyle Basketball Tournament being held at Sharon High School.

Hickory standout Geoff Evans and his Pittsburgh JOTS team saw their first action of the tournament and rolled to an 88-60 romp of the Northwest Pa. Cougars.

Evans, Mercer County's second all-time leading scorer, hit a pair of 3-pointers and finished with six points. Matt Carroll led the JOTS with 15 points and Ryan ``Archie'' Miller added 14.

Julian Blanks, Richard Bush and Casey Miller all scored 13 for the Cougars, who trailed 47-25 at halftime.

The Western Pa. Future Stars game against Franklin was postponed and will be made up at 11:15 a.m. Friday. In other games it was:

Martin Oberman (Lakeview) and Amos Upshaw (Grove City) each scored 14 points and Shane Meling (Slippery Rock) had 12, paced by three 3-pointers, to lead the Mercer County Basketball Club to a win in its first game of Open Division play.

Dontae Sanders had 12 points to lead Duquesne while Jaison Cook and Pete Wreiter each chipped in 10.

Handy Dan's Painting (Ohio Players) led 31-29 at the half but couldn't hang on as the Ohio Stars erupted for 41 points to pull out the victory.

Dubrey Black led the Stars with 28 points. Rashon Brown chipped in 21 and Alfrado Jackson had 10. Robert Curd had 17 points for Handy Dan's. Dave Young added 12 and Troy Dubose 10.




Boys Underclassmen Division

Ramsey Insurance Agency (Sharon) parlayed its home-court familiarity en route to a romp over West Middlesex.

Marty Barnett led the way with 21 points, while Bobby Roberson and Earl Chapman added 17 and 11, respectively.

Derek Gearhart led West Middlesex with 13 points.

Damon Clayton had 11 points and Lamar Jefferson had 10 to lead Kennedy Christian past Hickory.

Tony Mastrian scored nine points to pace Hickory, which trailed 26-7 at halftime after connecting on just three field goals.

Kennedy Christian will play Ramsey Insurance Agency at 3 p.m. today in the underclassmen semifinals.




Big guns arrive



Open Division pool play continues today (Thursday) with several Division I recruits taking to the court. Top players in the 12:30 game on the Metro squad are Parade's national high school football player of the year and Penn State University recruit, LaVar Arrington. Joining him is fellow PSU football recruit Sam Crenshaw, 6-10 Rider recruit Mark Van Sickle and 6-9 Steve Flores, who's headed to Pitt.

Boston BABC, playing in the 5:30 game, highlights four major-college basketball recruits. Jamal Comma is headed to Providence, John DePina is Massachussetts bound, Shannon Crooks is going to St. John's and 6-10 Mike Bradley is headed to defending national champion Kentucky.
