SHARON

Sharon woman is volunteer with security

Her job might not be as glamorous compared to others surrounding the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta, but what Kelly Morrison Mikita does is equally important.

Mikita, who is married and resides in Sharon, is a volunteer recruiter and the personal manager of security at the Olympic Stadium _ where the track & field will take place. The key word here is volunteer.

How did Mikita come about getting this position?

Mikita attended meetings in Atlanta while working for Winner International _ a licensee with the Olympics _ as coordinator liaison. Winner International donated its various clubs for the games. While there, Mikita got the position and has been in Atlanta since January.

``My job is to find volunteers for the Olympic games,'' said Mikita, a 1984 Sharon High graduate, who also graduate from the Shenango Valley School of Business. ``I go to area businesses and make presentations _ recruiting you might say.''

And about her security duties?

``I'm basically in charge of at least 1,000 volunteers a day,'' Mikita said. ``I check on them to make sure that they are fed and everything is in order. Remember, they're working for free and standing around in all that heat can sometimes get kind of frustrating.

``I go around and give them pep talks and encouragement. So far everybody has been really cooperative. The job is a huge responsibility at the Olympics. In security I get to see a lot of things that the average person wouldn't.''

``It's quite an honor to be a part of the centennial year of the Olympic games,'' Mikita said. ``It's a very exciting time for me and my family. I'm proud to serve my country.''
