Rod White ousted in individual; awaits team

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. (AP) -- U.S. archer Rod White of Hermitage saw his hopes for an individual medal die by one point Tuesday.

White, 19, who won his first-round match earlier in the day, lost in the second match 159-158 to Belgium's Paul Vermeiren. Vermeiren hit a 10 on his last arrow of the match.

Earlier White won 161-152 over Russia's Bayir Badenov in the first round. That avenged his loss to Badenov in the title match at the 1993 World Junior Championships.

White will shoot Friday in the team competition along with teammates Butch Johnson and Justin Huish, both of whom advanced to the round of 16 in the individual competition.

The 41-year-old Johnson, of Woodstock, Conn., capped his Tuesday rounds with a 164-157 victory over Australia's Matthew Gray. Earlier, Johnson mastered a slight wind and Slovenia's Matevz Krumpstar to win 158-140.

``I couldn't figure out the wind for the first six arrows,'' said Johnson, who is in his second Olympics. ``But once I got it figured out, I was OK.''

Huish, a 21-year-old from Fountain Valley, Calif., took the lead for good after three arrows in both his matches. He beat Kazakstan's Sergei Martynov 166-157, and followed with a 166-155 victory over England's Gary Hardinges.

``I did pretty good. I wasn't as shook up as I thought I'd be,'' said Huish, a first-time Olympian. ``I was just testing the water. This is definitely a fun experience.''
Janet Dykman of El Monte, Calif., was to resume in women's competition today with a third-round match against Wang Xiaozhi of China. Wang upset top-ranked Lina Herasymenko of Ukraine on Monday.

Also Tuesday, the world's No. 1 archer eliminated the 1992 Olympic gold medalist. Norway's Martinus Grove won 161-158 over France's Sebastien Flute, who won the gold at the Barcelona Games. The match was tied at the halfway point before Grove built a seven-point lead with three shots to go.

The final rounds of the men's individual competition are Thursday.
