SEASON PREVIEW: BROOKFIELD
Coach Tim Filipovich hopes his Lady Warriors can shoot well and be fundamentally sound for the 2002-03 season as they look to rebound from a disappointing 8-14 mark last season. Holly Demay, a 5-foot-8 senior guard, returns to lead a very young Brookfield squad that features six underclassmen on the roster. Joining DeMay in the starting lineup will be 5-5 junior guard Katlyn Nasci and 5-5 junior guard Jessica Zebroski. Rounding out the starters for the Lady Warriors will be 5-7 sophomore Raquel Brenner and Ashley Gramsky, a 5-8 sophomore post player. "We are a quick team, but we need to show patience in running our offense so that we can be successful," said Filipovich. Senior Kiona Ivery, a 5-8 post player, and 5-10 senior Sara Jugenhiemer will help in adding depth to the inside play, while 5-5 junior guard Katie Miller and 5-3 sophomore guard Rachel Pasquerilla wiil come off the bench to work in the Lady Warriors' backcourt. "We will be inexperienced this year. We are a very young this season, but we have a great work ethic. They really practice hard and are working on being fundamentally sound," Filipovich stated. "We are also a pretty good shooting team. That will also be a great asset for us this season." Lack of height is also another concern for Filipovich, who said, "Our size will pose problems for us to match-up against taller teams on our schedule." Brookfield's schedule is not a easy one this season as the Lady Warriors compete in the rugged TAC-8 against defending league champion Girard and a very talented Hubbard team. The Lady Warriors also will host their annual Christmas tournament with Trumbull County powerhouse Howland joining Farrell and Sharon. In talking about the very competitive TAC-8 this season, Filipovich says Hubbard and Girard are the top teams in the league while Newton Falls is also a vey good team. "Every game in the TAC this year is like a district championship game. You must play well every night or you will be in trouble." Note: Filipovich will be assisted by long-time aide Kevin Boyd and the junior varsity will be handled by Brookfield alumnus Shawn Hammond. -- By Jim Powers, Herald writer.
