Veteran head coach Dave Konczal enters his seventh season at the helm of the Hubbard High Lady Eagles, and he's very excited, having welcomed back six seniors along with four key juniors.

Hubbard is coming off a very successful 2001-02 season in which the Lady Eagles ended 18-4 overall and 14-2 in the tough Trumbull Athletic Conference. Hubbard's season ended in a 65-64 double-overtime loss to Salem in the sectional tournament.

All-State volleyball player Katy Jo Mroski returns to lead the Lady Eagles. The 6-foot-2 senior post led Hubbard in scoring and rebounding a year ago and is bound for Indiana University to continue her education and volleyball career. Anna DeJulio, a 5-5 senior point guard ,will be the floor general this season, while 5-5 senior shooting guard Jami Duvall will add experience. Junior Lynle Cornell, a 5-7 guard and 6-2 senior post player Jill Phillips will round out the Lady Eagles' starting quintet.

Key reserves coming off the bench to lend depth to the Lady Eagles will be 5-8 junior post Lonnie Sargent; Courtney Hinkle, a 5-7 senior frontliner, and 5-6 senior guard Amie Coonce and 5-8 junior Lisa Nemez, a pair of guards.

"We are a very experienced team that plays a very tough non-conference schedule. That schedule is one of the toughest in the area," stated Konczal.

Included on that non-conference schedule is Steel Valley Conference favorite Boardman, a very balanced Salem team, and Austintown-Fitch.

The only aspect of the Lady Eagles contingent that concerns Konczal is depth.

"We do not go very deep into our bench. That was evident in our opener against Boardman (a 61-49 loss last week)."

Konczal stated that Girard is the team to beat in the TAC this year, as the Lady Indians return all five starters from last year's 15-1 league championship team.

Notes: Ron DeJulio and Ross Stouffer once again will assist Konczal. ... No schedule was submitted. -- By Jim Powers, Herald writer.
