Sharon veteran coach Dave Ciafre has several new faces in the lineup this season, but thus far he likes what he sees.

"We scrimmaged at Shaler and I thought we really did a nice job," said Ciafre. "They didn't get intimidated. There were some tough teams there including Oak Glen of West Virginia. Oak Glen is a state contender every year in West Virginia.

"I think we'll be all right. We lost some kids (quit) that surprised me a little bit. But I think we'll be OK. We may be a little green in some places, but overall the kids are working really hard."

Key losses to graduation last year were regional champion Eric Squatrito and district qualifier Ryan Martell.

Freshman Robert Goddin will fill the 103 slot for Sharon, with junior Steve Cooper at 112. Junior letterman Tom Safranic, a district qualifier, is at 119, with sophomore Tom Kolsky at 125. Freshman Mike Snyderwine is at 130, followed by sophomore letterman Dominic Ross at 135. Sectional runner-up Chris Whalen, a junior, will be at 140, with sophomore Jason Squatrito at 145.

Senior Chrystan Bedell, section runner-up at 171, is down to 152, while senior Mark Zamora, a district qualifier, will fill the 160 slot. Senior Logan Mailie, who lettered as a sophomore but didn't wrestle last season, is back at 171. Senior Casey Pagliarini is at 189, with senior letterman Juan Zamora, bouncing back from a late-season injury last season, is at 215. Heavyweight will be either junior Bill Howard, junior Josh Ost or senior Curtis Jones.

Others who could crack the lineup are juniors Brent Davensizer and Evan Simpson at 140 or 145; sophomore Mike Cain at 130 or 135, and sophomore Tony Merolillo at 152.

"We have enough weak spots that we're going to run into some challenges," said Ciafre, "But overall I'm happy with the way we're progressing.

"The county is pretty solid. Commodore Perry should be strong; Hickory should be tough; Grove City has a lot of good young kids; and there's always Reynolds.

Ciafre is assisted at the varsity level by Barry Anderson, Gary Gula, Jeremy Whalen, Larry Norris and Gary Bedell. Jeff Krecek, Jim Connelly and Bill Dorfi are at the junior high, with Joe Moss, Bill Scheurermann and Jerry Mausser head the junior program.
