Mercer nips Tigers; GJR loses

It seemed as though neither team wanted the 1996-97 regular season to end, as it took overtime to decide the victor between Sharon and Mercer boys' basketball teams Tuesday night.

And it was the Mustangs who came out on top of the Mercer County Athletic Conference interclassification game, outscoring Sharon 10-6 in the extra frame to finish the year with a 52-48 victory.

Trailing 42-41 with seconds left in regulation, Sharon's Bear Shimrack went to the foul line for two shots, but missed both. Jeff Valentino was there for the rebound and in the process, drew a foul. He went 1-of-2 from the stripe to knot the game at 42, forcing OT.

Sharon converted 20 of 33 (60.6 percent) free throws, paced by Marty Barnett's 9-for-14 effort, while Brandon McElfresh's 9-for-9 marksmanship led Mercer's 19-for-24 (79.2) effort.

Valentino scored 14 points to pace the Class AAA Tigers (7-17), who rallied from an 11-4 first-quarter deficit to lead by the third-quarter turn, 27-26.

McElfresh had 20 points for Class AA Mercer (10-14), and Joe Ziccardi chipped in 10.

DuBois 64
GJR 53

At DuBois, the host Beavers led from the outset in the non-league outing, and George Junior was not able to draw any closer than 13 points during the second half.

DuBois was led by Judd Smith's 20 points, including four treys, and double-digit contributions from Shawn Hanzely (15), Chris Harris (11) and Nick Guyton 10). Ryan Hibbert also hauled in a half-dozen caroms.

GJR (13-11) was led by Antonio Collins' 20 points and 14 and 10 points respectively submitted by Theo Fields and Cliff Bradley.

George Junior will open District 10 Class AA playoff action at 7:30 p.m. Friday against Rocky Grove at Oil City High School.
