Muskies win tiebreaker

It isn't often a 7-18 season can be termed a successful one.

Coach Scott Taylor and his Jamestown Muskies, however, will do just that this year.

The Muskies claimed the French Creek Valley Conference's No. 3 seed in the District 10 Class A playoffs Wednesday night with a 59-52 victory over Linesville in a tiebreaker contest at Maplewood High School.

``It was a very big win,'' Taylor said. ``And it's very satisfying. It's nice to go out and win your way into the playoff spot.''

The Muskies (5-13 in the FCVC), trailed 42-40 after three quarters before rallying with a 19-10 fourth-quarter surge to secure the victory.

Taylor said he believes it's been 10 years since a Jamestown boys' basketball team has qualified for district play and the first while competing in the FCVC.

``The last banner up on our wall was '87 when we played in the old Upper Allegheny League,'' Taylor said. ``This is my sixth year and we didn't make the playoffs before.''

Joe Yurisic paced the Muskies, who led 31-27 at halftime, with 19 points, while Jered McElhaney added 10.

Craig Summers tallied 15 points, Anthony Armstrong 13 and Jim Harakal had 10 for the Lions, who finished 8-17 overall and 5-13 in the FCVC.

Jamestown won the game at the free throw line, canning 22-of-32 attempts, while Linesville was only 2-of-6.

The Muskies will take on Mercer County Athletic Conference champion West Middlesex (15-9) in a first-round Class A contest at 8:30 p.m. Friday at Farrell High School.

``We saw them play Kennedy,'' Taylor said of West Middlesex. ``The're aggressive, fast and they have Steve Bowers. And he's a good ballplayer.''
