George Junior clips Union City
George Junior Republic already had a berth in the PIAA Class AA state playoffs entering the Tigers' District 10 AA consolation final matchup with Union City Friday night.
But a victory was virtually a necessity as the loser was going to have to face the WPIAL champion in the first round of interdistrict play.
So the Tigers took care of business with an exciting 55-52 victory in overtime.
At Erie, the Tigers secured a matchup with the District 6 champions next Saturday in the first round of the state playoffs with the exciting victory over the Bears.
George Junior (16-11) led 24-22 at the intermission and 40-35 after threequarters before Union City (24-3), which lost its second consecutive game to a Mercer County Athletic Conference foe, stormed back to tie the contest at 49.
The Tigers then secured the victory by outscoring the Bears, 6-3, in the extra frame.
Jamal Benjamin pumped in 19 points, Cliff Bradley added 11 and Mike Brown tallied 10 for the defending PIAA champion Tigers, who are competing in interdistrict play for the seventh consecutive season.
Bill McKinney scored 14 points and Keith Anthony and Ashley Orris each had 11 for Union City, which led 14-12 after one quarter.
