PIAA BAKSETBALL PLAYOFFS
Erie Prep, New Castle are ousted
By The Associated Press
Naron Jackson scored 21 points to lead Pittsburgh Schenley to a 36-33 upset of top-ranked Erie Cathedral Prep Wednesday in the second round of the PIAA Class AAAA Boys Tournament.
Jackson scored 18 points in the second half, including a foul shot with 3 seconds remaining, to rally Schenley from a 22-12 halftime deficit. Erie Prep had a chance to tie the game with 5 seconds remaining, but Ben Straub missed two foul shots.
``We had them on the ropes and couldn't put them away,'' said Erie Prep coach Marcel Arribi. ``They made the plays coming down the stretch and we didn't. We can't make any excuses for this loss.''
The victory earns Schenley (23-4), the District 8 champion, a berth in Saturday's quarterfinals against Franklin Regional and avenges last year's loss to Erie Prep in the quarterfinals.
Erie Prep (24-3) was led by R.J. Fiorelli, who had 16 points, and Julian Blanks, who had 12.

In Class AAA girls, Lauren Donnelly scored 18 points to lead Pittsburgh North Catholic (24-4) to a 56-34 victory over Westinghouse (17-11). The victory earned North Catholic its sixth consecutive quarterfinal berth.
