Slippery Rock nips Kennedy in overtime

A pair of playoff-bound teams, Slippery Rock and Kennedy Christian, capped outstanding regular seasons in fine fashion Monday night, with the visiting Lady Rockets escaping with an exciting 60-58 Mercer County Athletic Conference interclassification victory in overtime.

``It was great preparation for the playoffs, said Kennedy coach Father Rick Tomasone. ``There was a lot of playoff intensity.''

Slippery Rock edged Kennedy, 50-45, earlier this season.

Kennedy's Colleen Hough converted a free throw to knot the count at 52 with two seconds remaining in regulation, thereby forcing the extra session.

In OT, Slippery Rock's Jamie Dick _ who tallied a game-high 24 points _ scored on a put-back with approximately 15 seconds remaining, providing Slippery Rock with a 59-58 margin.

Kennedy had three chances to go ahead in the game's final seconds, but missed all three attempts. Then with less than a full second remaining, Michele French's free throw provided Slippery Rock with its final margin of victory.

Dick scored 14 of Slippery Rock's 15 fourth-quarter points, then she and Kristen Hogg evenly divided the Lady Rockets' eight overtime points. Erica Youngman bucketed nine of her 17 points in the third period, as Slippery Rock remained within striking distance, trailing 38-37 entering the fourth frame.

``It was a great tune-up for the playoffs,'' Slippery Rock head coach John Tabisz said. ``It was nip-and-tuck the whole way.''

Cicuto posted a 20-point, 13-rebound double-double for Class A Kennedy Christian (19-5), while Tara Stevens hauled in 10 rebounds and Laslow distributed a half-dozen assists.

In addition to her two-dozen points, Dick distributed seven assists, Youngman drilled a trio of treys, and Whitney DeFrishia hauled in 14 rebounds for Slippery Rock (19-4).

The Lady Rockets open the Class AAA District 10 playoffs at 2:45 p.m. Saturday at Cambridge Springs High School against either North East or Harbor Creek, the Erie County League's third seed. The two meet at 6:30 p.m. today at General McLane High.

Kennedy commences the Class A playoffs at 1 p.m. Saturday at Farrell High against either Union City or Linesville of the French Creek Valley Conference. Those teams meet 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Maplewood High School.
