Slippery Rock girls drop heartbreaker

The Slippery Rock Lady Rockets lost their bid Friday night for a berth in the state playoffs with 50-49 loss to Harbor Creek in the District 10 AAA consolation finals.

At Grove City College, Colleen Wells dropped in a short jumper at the buzzer to lift the Lady Huskers to the heart-pounding District 10 Class AAA consolation final victory and a berth in the PIAA state playoffs.

Slippery Rock's Erica Youngman had given the Lady Rockets a 49-48 lead with a basket with nine seconds left in the game, but the Lady Huskers raced down the court to nail the game-winner.

The Lady Rockets, who closed the season at 20-6, jumped to an 11-6 edge by the end of the first quarter, but Harbor Creek (20-8) managed to tie the game at 24 at the intermission with an 18-13 second-quarter surge.

The Lady Huskers then moved in front 38-36 after three quarters before watching Slippery Rock come back to move in front 49-48 with less than 10 seconds remaining, setting up the late heroics.

Jen Resinger scored 19 points and Wells added a dozen markers for Harbor Creek, which opens up interdistrict play March 8 against the WPIAL runner-up.

Marisa Taylor rifled in a game-high 21 points and Youngman posted 14 for the Lady Rockets of coach John Tabisz. No further details were available.
