Lakeview girls in playoffs despite loss
At Grove City College, the Lady Sailors trailed throughout and were crippled by 22 turnovers and 36.4 percent (16 of 44) shooting against their French Creek Valley Conference rivals.
The teams split their FCVC home- and-home regular-season series.®MDNM’
Saegertown (23-4) was led in scoring by the trio of Katie Manuel (14), Janet Williams (12) and Amanda Scott (11), and the Lady Panthers connected on 16 of 35 (45.7) floor shots. Saegertown also out-rebounded Lakeview by a 28- 23 margin, led by Scott's game-high eight caroms.
Lakeview (21-6) was led by the twosome of Shannon McCurdy and Casey Spence, who bucketed 15 and 12 points, respectively, and Spence ’ snared seven.
``I really don't even know what to say, I'm just frustrated,'' admitted Lakeview mentor Ted Jones. ``I know we're a better ball team than them, (but) their attitude's better than our's. They have that winning attitude. They've been to the western finals, and they've been to the Final Eight last year. It's tough to deal with a good attitude, I mean, this game's a lot more mental than it is physical,'' Jones reasoned.
``We're the best `close' team there is,'' Jones continued. ``We got close to Girard, then they blew it away, too.
``(But) we wanted to beat (Saegertown) 'cause we wanted to prove that we're a better team. Even though they won are league, we wanted to prove that we were the best team in the league. We didn't do it. They proved it. They proved that they are the best team in the league,'' Jones admitted.
The Lady Sailors now will meet Greensburg Central Catholic in the opening round of the state playoffs.
``We have the defending state champs. I'd rather be dipped in tuna fish and swim through a shark tank,'' Jones quipped.
