PIAA AA GIRLS STATE PLAYOFFS

Greensburg C.C. 62
Lakeview 40

Sailors ousted by state power

GREENSBURG, Pa. _ Face a team that features a 1,000-point scorer and oftentimes a team has an opportunity to key defensively on that player and perhaps even shut him or her down.

A team that features three 1,000-point scorers, however, is a completely different story _ one that Friday night closed the book on the Lakeview Sailors' outstanding season.

The Sailors held an early lead against Greensburg Central Catholic, the returning state runners-up, before succumbing 62- 40 in a PIAA Class AA first round encounter at Greensburg-Salem High School. Central Catholic (27-2) will now take on Bishop Guilfoyle, a 51-26 victor over Cranberry Friday, in a second-round contest Tuesday.

Becky Berrett, her twin sister Jenny, and Hillary Prokay, who go 5-foot- 10, 5-10 and 6-1 respectively, all entered the game having surpassed the 1,000-point plateau for C.C. and all reached double-figures Friday.

Prokay nailed 17 points, Becky Berrett scored 14 and Jenny Berrett 13 for C.C., which trailed 15-12 after one quarter before taking control.

A 22-9 second-quarter surge enabled the WPIAL champions to grab a 34-24 lead at the intermission before a 17-3 third-quarter explosion put the game away.

Amanda Hildebran finished with a game-high 18 points for the Sailors (21- 7), who despite the loss appear to have a bright future as they return nearly every starter next season.

Returning players who started or saw extensive playing time for coach Ted Jones, who could not be reached for comment for this report, are juniors Casey Spence and Brooke Barthen, and sophomores Shannon McCurdy, Crystal Spangler and Retta Zahniser.

Seniors who capped their careers were Hildebran, Mandy Montgomery, Jamie Spangler and Chris Spence.

Jones has compiled a 68-39 (.636) record in four seasons at Lakeview.
