GC'S ERRERA DUMPS 2-TIME CHAMP MORRIS

9 section titlists suffer defeat in quarterfinals

There are no guarantees in wrestling. One week you're on top, the next...

Opening night action at the District 10 Class AA Championships proved that fact as section champions were falling fast. Included in that list of nine section winners who bowed was two-time District 10 champ Bill Morris of Saegertown, who dropped a hard-fought 6-4 decision to Grove City's Anthony Errera in the quarterfinals Friday at Sharon High gym.

One other defending district champ, Mercer's Kevin Myers at 171, lost in the quarterfinals to Commodore Perry's Mark Chess by injury default in the third. Myers lost the previous week and finished third in Section 3.

While Morris and Myers fell, six other defending district champs moved into the semifinals, which were to start at 10 a.m. today. They are: Mike Germano, 112, Sharpsville; Joe Ciotti, 119, Girard; Travis Hummel, 152, Eisenhower; Kevin Brown, 160, Jamestown; and Josh Pearce, 275, heavyweight.

Those five all scored falls, although Hummel had a tough quarterfinal matchup with Rick Hogue of Cochranton. Hogue, who had been nursing injuries much of the year, jumped to an early lead, but Hummel caught Hogue on his back and came away with the fall.

Other section champs beside Morris to lose were: 103 _ Ty Wise (Grove City) to Adam Renner (Seneca), 12-2; 112 _ Jeff Fors (Eisenhower) to Dave Ligo (Greenville), 7-4; 119 _ Bill Reigel (Seneca) to Jason DeLong (Sharon), 5-4; 135 _ Joel Urey (Commodore Perry) to Dan Aaron (Rocky Grove), 7-2; 140 _ Kyle Myers (Mercer) to Nick Ennis (Saegertown), fall in 1:28; 152 _ Fred Sloan (Sharpsville) to Jason Smith (Seneca), 4-3; 189 _ Josh Fiske (Ft. LeBoeuf) to Joe Rendos (Grove City), fall in 1:38, and Pete Darby (Hickory) to Luke Carothers (Cranberry), fall in 5:43.

On top of that, Reynolds 119-pound Section 3 champion Doug Woods was forced to withdraw prior to the tournament with a hand injury.

The Errera-Morris match was definitely the highlight of the evening for the large crowd of mat fans. Errera was holding onto a 6-4 lead late in the match, but had to fight off a very close takedown as the senior Morris spun behind the Eagle and almost dropped him to the mat. But the gutsy junior Errera battled hard to regain his feet and kept Morris from scoring.

The team race could be a battle to the finish, although Coach Bob Parker's Commodore Perry Panthers appear to have the upper hand with six matmen in the semis and two others alive in the consolation round. Perry has 351/2 points, with Sharon in second place with 28. The Tigers of Coach Dave Ciafre have five matmen alive in the semis and one in the consys.

Saegertown has 26 points, with four semifinalists.

Teams with three in the semis include Reynolds, Seneca, Eisenhower, Girard, and Ft. LeBoeuf.

There are two semifinal matchups today which should be highlight bouts. One will come at the end of the round when two-time Commodore Perry district champ Pearce takes on Sharon's Brian ``Bubba'' Griffin.

Ranking right up with that match will be the 160 pairing of Kevin Brown of Jamestown (29-0) against Keith Myers of Mercer (28-1). Myers' lone loss came against Brown.

Some other featured matches should be: 103 _ Girard's Aaron Diehl (28-1) against Seneca's Adam Renner (26-2); 125 _ Jason Nestor of Reynolds (28-1) against Ryan Nuhfer of Maplewood (25-5) and Tom McMath of Sharpsville (29-2) against Mike Rizzo of North East (28-3); 130 _ Craig Griffin of Sharon (29-3) vs. Adam Huck of Ft. LeBoeuf (30-1); 140 _ Wes Sindlinger of Commdore Perry (24-3) vs. Nick Ennis of Saegertown (25-4).

The tournament consolation finals will begin at 3:30 p.m. today, followed by the finals at 5:15.
