Pins, technical falls and Trojans highlight Section 2

GREENVILLE -- They were falling like flies during opening-night action at the annual District 10 Section 2-AA Wrestling Tournament at Greenville High School.

Including a handful of preliminary-round bouts, a full round of quarterfinals and another three consolation bouts, a total of 42 pins or technical falls were registered as the status quo prevailed in impressive fashion.

Greenville, in particular, proved dominating, as the Trojans tallied a half-dozen pins, including a pair from heavyweight Tony Masterofrancesco, and three technical falls. Kurt Holzshu, the defending 119-pound titlist and last year's most outstanding wrestler, recorded a 7-second pin.

The lone drawback for Greenville occurred in the 171-pound quarters, when Brian Anderle was illegally slammed by Commodore Perry's Andy Knauff and sustained a separated left shoulder and reportedly is out for the rest of the season. Anderle injured the shoulder earlier in the week, but fell fully on it during his bout with Knauff and was taken to a local hospital to have it checked.

Officially, no team title will be awarded this year, owing to the inaugural state-wide dual-match championships. However, veteran Greenville mentor Jim Miller conveyed some interesting information at the conclusion of the first day's festivities.

"Unofficially, there is a team title at stake,'' a grinning Miller corrected. "The District 10 Coaches Association is sponsoring a team championship, not only in this section, but in the other sections, also. So there is a team championship at stake.

"But above and beyond that, this is what the kids have been trying for all year, and we're hoping that they'll continue to wrestle with intensity,'' Miller continued. "It's something that the officers of the District 10 Coaches Association (for which Miller serves as vice-president) thought that we could go ahead and keep the score ourselves and award a team championship, because it is very important to the kids and it's also something to strive for from year to year. Even in placements, it gives you something to aim for if you don't place as high this year; at least you have a starting point (for next season).

"All the teams are represented and they enter their entire team,'' Miller explained. "Once you get to districts and go on, you lose some 'teams' because somebody's eliminated.

"And,'' Miller, while turning to glance over his shoulder at banners displayed on the GHS gymnasium wall, added, "as I look at 1958 over there, I kind of hate to break with tradition.''

On Friday, top seeds prevailed, setting the stage for an interesting semifinal round this morning commencing at 10. Among the standouts advancing in each weight class are:

Following the morning semifinals, the consolation finals and championship finals will commence at 6 and 7:30 p.m., respectively, with the top four from each weight class advancing to next weekend's D-10 championships at Sharon High School.
