SEASON PREVIEW: WEST MIDDLESEX
Rob Gelesky and the Ms. Reds are looking forward to another tough season in MCAC-A. It's only them and Commodore Perry to duke it out, and all signs point to a classic rivalry. "It will be a battle between us and Commodore Perry," explained Gelesky "We're pretty similar talent-wise and number-wise and things we do. It would be nice if we had more single-A teams It's just us and them and we both made it (to the playoffs) last year which was nice. "Well, right now we're pretty optimistic." said Gelesky. "The girls have been working hard and we're just looking for some improvement from last year." Last season, the Ms. Reds reached an admirable mark of 7-17 and split league games with Commodore Perry to tie for the title. Gone from last years team are Liz Bowser, Tammy Bugher and Jessie Leon, who led last season's squad with 178 points. "The girls last year, I take my hat off to them, they had a lot of distractions and they still played well." Gelesky said. Gelesky notes a gradual progression in his teams performance from 4-20 in 1998 to last year's 7-17 mark, and hopes it extends to this season. To continue their winning ways coach Gelesky is going to rely on a pair of experienced seniors to lead the way. "We have two nice seniors coming back, both letterwinners, and we're looking to them to be leaders and we have a nice underclassmen group so we'll see what happens." One of those seniors, 5-5 swingman Kristine Redmon, is a three-time letterwinner who averaged 3.5 points per game and pulled down a team-best 8.2 rebounds per game. The other, 5-6 forward Karen Bowser, is a two-year letterwinner who also averaged 3.5 points per game. Junior Michelle Bator, a 5-6 shooting guard ended the season as the team's second leading scorer with 168 points. She will be followed by 5-7 center Amy Argenziano who earned a 4.5 points per game average. Also aiming for a starting position at guard is 5-4 sophomore Missy Leon. Gelesky also expects sophomores Kris Wingard, Brandy Parker, Kristy Neiswonger, first-year senior Kim Powell and freshman Jill Bowser to be in the mix. "We have a nice group of underclassmen," Gelesky said. "We're going to lack height again, but we've got some quickness and our depth (16) is a little better than last year." With the changes in the lineup, the administrative side of the team will also see a couple of changes. "My staff is totally different." stated Gelesky. "I've got last year's boys jayvee coach Mike Williams as my assistant. He also used to be the head coach for Allegheny-Clarion Valley. Jack Womer is helping out as a volunteer. Ed Pikna is in charge of the elementary league and he will also help out up here. "We're going to play some tough teams," Gelesky summed up. "We've got Sharon on our schedule, Hickory's going to have a nice squad. But we've set our goals and now we're working hard to accomplish them. We made the playoffs last year and now we're just looking to build upon that."
