N
ew cheftestants, new challenges,
amazing newdishes.What isn’t there
to love about new things?
With a new season of Bravo’s“Top
Chef”on the horizon, the now-familiar for-
mula’s tossing in an extra dose of “new-
ness”this time out:NewOrleans.Yep, for
this 11th season, some of the nation’smost
promising up-and-coming chefs are head-
ed down to the Big Easy to take in one of
the country’smost recognizable food
scenes—while competing to be the last
chef standing, of course.
While“Top Chef:NewOrleans”may
premiereWednesday,Oct. 2, some of the
more Internet-savvy viewers have already
gotten an early taste of what’s to come.
“Top Chef’s”host Padma Lakshmi has
been doing a side gig online,where she’s
visitedmany of NewOrleans’ own“top
chefs”and put them through their paces to
decidewho’s worthy of entering the com-
petition (“Padma’s Picks”are still available
to viewon Bravo’s website at
www.bravotv.com).
But it isn’t all flashy and new. There’s a
reasonwe all have comfort foods that we
keep coming back to.Award-winning chef
TomColicchio is returning as the competi-
tion’s head judge, and“Food&Wine”
magazine’s Gail Simmons will be joining
him to provide insightful—and often bit-
ing—commentary on the contestants’
dishes.
Alsomaking a comeback is the online
extra“Last Chance Kitchen.”First appear-
ing two seasons ago in“Top Chef:Texas,”
the vignettes showcase the eliminated
chefs going head-to-head in a contest to
cook their way back into the competition.
Besides being fast-paced fan favorites,
thesemini-episodes have earned them-
selves Emmy nominations and secured
themselves as just onemore piece of “Top
Chef’s”winning formula.
Andwhat a formula it is. In aTV land-
scape that’s filledwith food programming
for virtually every taste,“Top Chef”rises
above the crowd.Unlike countless other
reality shows,“Top Chef”doesn’t just bring
fame and a cash prize to its winner, it can
launch a promising chef’s career.Not only
is the“Top Chef”awarded a sizable cash
prize and the publicity that comes fromap-
pearing in a hit show, but he or she is also
given a spread in“Food&Wine”maga-
zine, and is featured at themagazine’s an-
nual Food&Wine Classic inAspen, Colo.
It’s the kind of attention that can thrust
a young chef into the culinary scene’s spot-
light, and that’s just what these hopefuls
are looking for.The 11th season of “Top
Chef”hits the Big Easy Oct. 2.
