T
he testosterone level on CBSwill be go-
ing up this season.
With a cast stackedwith both comedi-
ans and television veterans,“WeAreMen”
has been generating some buzz as fall pre-
miere season gets underway.The freshman
series kicks off Monday, Sept. 30, on CBS.
An ensemble comedy, the show follows
the exploits of four men of varying ages
and backgrounds as they band together to
navigate the difficult waters of singledom.
All have beenmarried—or almost mar-
ried—before and are dealingwith the
fallout of bad break ups.
As the series opens, CarterThomas
(played by relatively unknown comedian
Christopher Nicholas Smith) is ready to get
married to the love of his life. His dreams
come crashing down around him, though,
when aman barges into thewedding cere-
mony to declare his love for Carter’s fian-
cee, Sara (Fiona Gubelmann). Sara prompt-
ly runs off with theman, leaving Carter
alone at the altar. Soon, Carter finds him-
self living in a temporary rental complex,
where hemeets a group of menwhowill
change his life.Or at least spice it up a little.
Much like his on-screen character, Chris-
topher Nicholas Smith is somewhat of a
newbie.Though he’s had one-time guest
spots in some high-caliber comedy series
—“The Office,”“30 Rock”and“TheMin-
dy Project”to name a few—his biggest
claim to fame so far is his starring role in
“ParanormalActivity 3” (2011), the third
installment of the cult horror series that
seems to be unending (the fourthwas re-
leased in 2012, and a fifth is slated for re-
lease in 2014).His relative inexperience
shouldwork in his favor as lifemimics art
— just like his character, he is surrounded
and lifted up bymenwho have been there
before.
Tony Shalhoub definitely has some ex-
pertise to share both on and off screen. He
plays Frank Russo, an older manwho is
very experiencedwhen it comes to break
ups and divorce. In fact, he’s been divorced
four times, still fancies himself somewhat
of a ladies’ man, and isn’t at all shy about
sharing his“knowledge”with Carter. Shal-
houb has had a long and successful career
in both filmand television. His big break
was as Italian taxi driverAntonio Scarpacci
in the NBC series“Wings,”which ran for
eight seasons from1990 to 1997.His next
television stint was“Stark RavingMad,”a
popular and critically acclaimed comedy
that nevertheless lasted only one season.
You can’t keep a good comic down,
though, and Shalhoub bounced backwith
the series that won hima GoldenGlobe,
USANetwork’s“Monk,” in 2002.“WeAre
Men”marks the comedian’s first official
return to television since“Monk”conclud-
ed in 2009, but that doesn’t mean the fun-
nyman has been idle.Over the years, Shal-
houb has been a part of numerous films,
some of themost memorable being“Gal-
axy Quest” (1999),“Cars” (2006) and
“Pain&Gain” (2013).Having been a part
of somany beloved series and films, he has
a following of fans fromwhich“WeAre
Men” is sure to benefit.
Actor and political activist Kal Penn
plays Gil Bartis, a self-employedmanwho
has experienced divorce firsthand: his wife
caught him trying his best to have an affair.
Even though his chosen extramarital part-
ner wasn’t feeling so frisky at the time, it
was enough to destroy Gil’smarriage,
which is why he’s ended up at the tempo-
rary housing complexwith the others. Penn
has also had lots of small-screen experi-
ence, appearing in shows such as“ER,”
“Tru Calling”and“24”before landing the
role of Dr. Lawrence Kutner on“House”
and amemorable guest-arc on“How I Met
Your Mother”as Robin’s therapist and love
interest. Small screen aside, Penn is proba-
bly best known for his portrayal of Kumar
Patel in the cult classic“Harold and Ku-
mar” films, but he’s not all fun and games.
In 2009, after campaigning diligently for
President Barack Obama, Pennwas offered
the position of associate director in the
White House Office of Public Engagement,
which he accepted, necessitating his de-
parture from“House.”Thankfully forTV
fans, he left hisWhite House gig in 2010 to
fulfill commitmentsmade beforehand,
paving theway for his return to the small
screen.
The final member of the quirkyman-
group is Stuart Strickland (Jerry O’Connell),
anOB/GYN trying to keep his assets hid-
den fromhis soon-to-be-ex-wife as they go
through amessy divorce. He has lots of
dating advice for his newly single young
friend, but it remains to be seen how tak-
ing that advicewill work out for Carter.
O’Connell began his acting career at a very
young age: he starred in“Stand ByMe”
(1986) at only 12 years old, andwent on to
star in such films as“Joe’sApartment”
(1996),“Tomcats” (2001) and“Baby on
Board” (2009). It was the Canadian televi-
sion show“My Secret Identity”that really
launched him into stardom, however.He
starred in the series at only 14.Hewent on
to star in the Fox/Sci Fi Channel series
“Sliders” (1995-1999) andNBC’s“Cross-
ing Jordan” (2002-2007) and is thrilled to
return to television in“WeAreMen”this
season.
The lighthearted look at amore serious
issue is sure tomake for some great come-
dicmoments.With a talented cast and a
solid premise,“WeAreMen” is sure to
make a splash.Tune in to the premiere epi-
sodeMonday, Sept. 30, on CBS.
