Timeline and tagging
Choose “Timeline and Tagging” from
left column.
˛
I leave the options here to your
discretion. Your actions may bring criti-
cism from some if you hold a tight line,
or open the door for uninvited activities
if you are too loose.
Blocking
Choose “Blocking” from left column.
˛
Manage all the people, applications
and events that you have blocked on
Facebook.
Mobile
Choose “Mobile” from left column.
˛
Smartphone users can manage
their accounts from their phones.
Followers
Choose “Followers” from the left col-
umn.
˛
Turn it on if you want to use this
feature.
Apps
Choose “Apps” from left column. Be
aware that many apps have allowed vi-
ral and hacking to take place. Never
use a third party app. Facecrooks rec-
ommends that you visit their webpage
and look up that article entitled: “Why
You Should Not Install Fun and Enter-
taining Facebook Applications.”
˛
To disable apps on your Facebook
account you can set “Apps you Use” to
off. My virus protection software is an
application forcing me to keep this set-
ting at “on” and it is listed as approved.
˛
Set the limits inside this area with
care. If you turn off all apps you will be
unable to use any apps or play games.
Yes, games are apps and some have
been the cause for accounts being
hacked.
Ads
Choose “Ads” from left hand column.
˛
I recommend you set both options
under “Ads” to “No One.”
Support Dashboard:
(Padlock symbol on solid blue bar)
The support dashboard allows quick
review of important security settings
and modification if needed. A very im-
portant element is the ability to view
your Facebook page as outsiders would
see it, or testing just how tight your se-
curity has been set.
If you follow these recommenda-
tions, your Facebook page has tight se-
curity and good protection; if you have
chosen other options or simply neglect-
ed to access these tools, you have left
the door ajar with a Welcome mat to
lure in the opportunistic guest.
In conclustion, Facebook has allowed
my family and friends to share quickly
information that we enjoy, but the en-
joyment requires vigilance. A very good
point to remember when using Face-
book is there are no free lunches no
matter what the postings shout. Seeing
something noted as free is a clear warn-
ing no matter what close family mem-
ber or friend shared it on your page.
Free has often been used to hack
pages.
Cute or ugly photos are also methods
for hacking. If you do not know the
source of material to be opened, do not
click on it. Many photos that tug at the
heart strings also contain hacking virus-
es and, yes, these include winsome pup-
pies or extremely graphic injuries.
Hacked friends inadvertently share the
virus picked up when clicking on that
eye-catching image. Be wise and don’t
end up sharing, too. í
