THE HERALD AND NEWSPAPERS across the
country are criticized by their readers for a lack of good news. Gleaned
from pages of The Herald, these are people deserving a round of applause.
- To JANE AUSTIN and DENISE MANNING of FARRELL, who head the
resident council at the Steel City Terrace public housing complex. The could
was formed from an idea by Ms. Austin's friend, Kim Richards, who has been
active in the Southwest Gardens development in the city. One of the priorities
of the council is to keep an eye on children who live and play in the area.
``If they know we're looking out for them they're going to manage their
Ps and Qs,'' said Ms. Manning, who is president of the 15-member council.
``That's why we need supervised activities for the children,'' added Ms.
Austin, who serves as vice president. The council is involved with Mercer
County Housing Authority in cleaning up the area and landscaping it. They
have attended the last two Farrell City Council meetings, and have caught
the attention of one veteran city councilman. ``I think there's something
good going on down there,'' remarked Councilman Louis Falconi.
- To DOMINIC TAMBER of Mercer, who was honored at the Academic
Games League of .MDFLLAmerica's national tournament in Baton Rouge, La.
While other students from Mercer attended and did well, he was Mercer's
top winner and received the outstanding senior award, a ``Thinker'' trophy
and a scholarship. Students had the chance to attend the games by competing
in the Tri-Bowl state tournament at Westminster College. Mercer had three
teams place in their divisions.
- To TOM KAIKIS of WEST MIDDLESEX, who received the Lillian Rosenblum
Award for volunteerism at Keystone Blind Association's annual awards dinner.
He has been a volunteer with the organization for several years and recently
completed a two-year term as president of its board of directors. He has
served on several committees and is chairman of the nominating committee.
Other awards presented by the blind association were: Charm Fischer Award
to Sandi Myers, George Heim Award to Nancy Allen, and Nettie Mann Award
to Paul Peterson.

PRAMPLE and MARY WISHART, who have been awarded Ottaway scholarships
