The Herald, Sharon, PA
The Herald's obituary policy

The Herald prides itself on being the newspaper of record for obituaries in the Mercer County area.

A funeral director usually provides The Herald with the obituary. Information can be accepted from relatives or friends, but we require verification of the death from a funeral home, hospital or coroner.

Pictures are used if submitted.

Deadlines are:

  • 8:30 a.m. weekdays for same-day publication. (On particularly busy days, information may be limited to incomplete obituaries close to deadline.)
  • 8:30 p.m. Friday to appear in Saturday morning's edition.
  • 8:30 p.m. Saturday to appear in Sunday morning's edition.

There is a basic charge for the text of an obituary. There also is a per-line/per-day charge for the funeral notice, which lists information such as place and time of service, calling hours and place of burial.

The news staff also may choose to write a separate news story/obituary if the deceased is newsworthy.

To place an obituary, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, call (724) 981-6100 or, toll-free (800) 981-1692 in Pa., Ohio and N.Y. On Fridays and Saturdays from 5 to 9 p.m., press "5" or dial Ext. 505 to reach the obituary writer. You may press "2" to reach an editor on the news desk.

Our fax number is (724) 981-5116. We ask that you call to confirm that your fax arrived.

Dala Barrow is our staff obituary writer.
