The Herald's obituary policy The Herald prides itself on being the newspaper of record for obituaries in the Mercer County area. A funeral director usually provides The Herald with the obituary. Information can be accepted from relatives or friends, but we require verification of the death from a funeral home, hospital or coroner. Pictures are used if submitted. Deadlines are:
There is a basic charge for the text of an obituary. There also is a per-line/per-day charge for the funeral notice, which lists information such as place and time of service, calling hours and place of burial. The news staff also may choose to write a separate news story/obituary if the deceased is newsworthy. To place an obituary, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, call (724) 981-6100 or, toll-free (800) 981-1692 in Pa., Ohio and N.Y. On Fridays and Saturdays from 5 to 9 p.m., press "5" or dial Ext. 505 to reach the obituary writer. You may press "2" to reach an editor on the news desk. Our fax number is (724) 981-5116.
