2 children die in house fire near Meadville on Friday

MEADVILLE (AP) — Flames swept through a Crawford County house Friday morning, killing two children and injuring two others, authorities said.

David Lind, 5, and his sister Kimberly, 4, died in the fire in Vernon Township. Their half sisters — twins Christina Marie and Kari Ann Shields, both 4 — were treated at Meadville Medical Center.

A nursing supervisor at the hospital did not return a message left about the twins’ condition. The children’s mother, Shelly Shields; her boyfriend, Art Moore; and the children’s grandmother, Barbara Shields, were able to escape.

Everyone in the house was asleep when the fire started, said Trooper Jeffrey Mermon, a fire investigator. He said David woke his mother and told her his bedroom was on fire.

He said the boy stayed in his mother’s room as she woke the other children and Moore, who was sleeping on a downstairs couch. David’s body was found upstairs, and Kimberly’s body was found downstairs.

The cause of the blaze had not been determined Friday afternoon.
