SLIPPERY ROCK
Woman gives SRU$2.5 million
The Associated Press
A Houston woman has donated $2.5 million to Slippery Rock University, in recognition of the work her daughter and son-in-law have done while teaching there a combined 52 years, the school said.
Ethel Carruth’s gift is the largest in the university’s history and the second-largest single gift ever in the State System of Higher Education, the university said Monday in a news release.
The gift, which is dedicated to the university’s renovation of West Hall, was in recognition of Carruth’s daughter, Dr. Carolyn Carruth Rizza, and her husband, Dr. Paul F. Rizza.
“Carolyn and Paul have had a positive impact on many students,” said Slippery Rock President G. Warren Smith. “This magnificent gift by Mrs. Carruth will enable their contribution to be even more long lasting.”
West Hall is the first building people see as they approach on Main Street..
Carolyn Rizza joined the faculty in 1975 and retired last year as a professor of sociology and social work and as head of the department of sociology, anthropology and social work.
“My parents have always been generous,” Carolyn Rizza said. “They enjoyed visiting us in Slippery Rock regularly and have always placed a high value on philanthropy and higher education ...”
Paul Rizza joined the faculty in 1972 as chairman of the geography department and from 1978 to 1980.
