World Day of Prayer servicesset in Hermitage, Grove City
Christians in more than 170 countries and in all 50 of the United States will observe World Day of Prayer next week. Services are planned for 1 p.m. Friday in Central Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 218 Meadowbrook Road, Hermitage; and in East Main Presbyterian Church, 120 E. Main St. (Route 58), Grove City.
Begun in 1887 by Mary Ellen James, a Presbyterian laywoman, the annual observance brings together women of various races, cultures and traditions. Since 1941, Church Women United, a grassroots ecumenical movement, has sponsored the observance in the United States. The group is composed of Protestant, Roman Catholic, Orthodox and other Christian women.
This year’s service was written by Christian women of Indonesia, with the theme, “Talitha Kumi: Young Woman, Stand up!” based on Mark 5:42. At age 12, a girl was dying but Jesus healed her. Today, many Indonesian children are experiencing poverty and child labor exploitation by multinational corporations that take away the life God intends. Inspired by this text, the Indonesian women see the hand of Jesus reaching out to them, inviting them to life in all its fullness.
The observances also are calls to mentoring relationships between older and younger women.
Those taking part in the Grove City service are asked to bring a can of food for Grace Food Pantry. An offering will benefit Church Women United’s ecumenical ministries. A nursery will be provided.
