MERCER COUNTY

Presbytery to align with group in Calif.

A new mission venture was reported Tuesday at a meeting of the Presbytery of Shenango held at Grove City College.

According to a news release, the report of the Mission, Communication and Stewardship Committee included information about a sister presbytery relationship with the San Gabriel (Calif.) Presbytery.

San Gabriel has 44 churches with 11,500 members. Worship services are held weekly in at least 13 languages. Because of the multi-ethnic nature of the area, the presbytery is in the process of establishing several new-church development pro- jects. The Shenango Presbytery, through its MCS Committee, wants to help establish those churches in partnership with the San Gabriel Presbytery. A missions trip will be planned for this summer for members of the Shenango Presbytery to visit San Gabriel and help with conducting vacation Bible schools.

In other business:

  • The presbytery approved a resolution to support the clergy of the Pulaski area in their attempt to close the adult book store that opened on Route 422.

  • The presbytery heard a report of the Rev. James Craig, administrator of Shenango Homes in New Wilmington. The home, which opened in 1968, is expanding to include senior care, from independent living to nursing care. There also will be a 15-bed Alzheimer’s unit. The Shenango Home property will be renovated to include suites for couples.

  • A report by the Christian Education Committee, presented by Dr. Margaret Trautman, told of a new curriculum that will be available in churches in the fall. She recommended clusters of churches contact her for a presentation of the new material. There will be a pre-Presbytery event April 25 at Westminster College, New Wilmington. This will include a free dinner and the preview of these new materials from the Presbyterian Publication Unit.

  • The Church and Community Committee is producing an event called “Undoing Racism/Community Organizing Workshop” in Bethany Presbyterian Church, Mercer, to be held May 5-7. Brochures can be obtained by contacting the Presbyterian Center at 528-1610.

Worship was led by the Rev. Dr. Stanley Keehlwetter, Grove City College dean and Bethany Presbyterian pastor. A necrology report listing the names of elders and clergy who died in 1999 was read. The Rev. Dr. James Bibza, a professor of religion and philosophy at Grove City College, preached. The New Grace Singers, a Grove City College vocal ensemble, sang.
