TRUMBULL COUNTY

Lamantia takes on Sheriff Altiere

The race for Trumbull County Sheriff will likely be decided on March 7.

With no Republicans running, the winner of the Democratic primary will likely win the office easily in November.

Steve Lamantia, 60, Warren, is challenging incumbent Sheriff Thomas L. Altiere, 50, also of Warren.

Lamantia, Howland’s police chief since 1993 and a retired Ohio Highway Patrol captain with 30 years on the job, thinks its time for a change.

“I’ve got problems with the current management of the budget and moneys allocated to this administration,” he said. “I feel I can do a better job, improve the County Drug Task Force, and cut the top heavy management staff.”

Second-termer Altiere, who preceded Lamantia as Howland top cop for 10 years, sees things differently.

“We’ve come a long way in seven years, and I want to complete many things I’ve started,” he said. “We are starting different programs in our jail to make money, including selling phone cards to the inmates, work-release programs, and housing federal prisoners in our jails, which generates about $100,000 monthly,” Altiere added.
