HERMITAGE

Board tables rezoning request

Hermitage Commissioners tabled a request Wednesday that, if approved, would rezone three properties bordering the Hermitage School District from institutional to central commercial. The North Hermitage Road property owners — J.J. & J. Land Development, the Scoccia Group and Antoinette D’Onofrio — made the request to city commissioners at a board work session that preceded the regular meeting.

Hermitage lawyer Mike Joanow, speaking Wednesday on behalf of the group, said he believes the delay will help his group and the Hermitage School District reach a compromise. The district has publicly opposed the project since the issue surfaced in October. But Joanow is confident the two sides can work out an agreement that addresses the district’s concerns and the property owners’ wishes.

“I’m happy to say we have been having a dialogue with the district,” Joanow said Wednesday as school directors and administrators looked on.

Joanow said the two sides are trying “to frame and craft an agreement” that would, among other things, restrict the commercial uses of the land. The restrictions would ensure safety and limit what types of business can sprout up on the land adjacent to the school property, Joanow added. Joanow told commissioners he would keep the board posted on negotiations.

At the regular meeting, commissioners approved tabling the motion, 4-0. Commissioner Pat White was absent.

The Mercer County Regional Planning Commission has recommended against rezoning the properties, while the Hermitage Planning Commission has backed rezoning them. City commissioners hold the final vote on the request.
