Skateboarders beware. You could be fined if you and your wheels are on Sharon City School District property.
The school board, principals and city police say they are trying to eliminate an ongoing problem with kids on skateboards harassing people and destroying school property.
School directors have mentioned in the past that kids on skateboards have damaged the sandstone in front of the high school.
Director Pamela Corini said kids also are skateboarding at the elementary schools and will soon begin ruining the stone there.
Robert Alcaro, high school principal, said Monday he tries to watch the school and keeps
kids with skateboards off the property, but he can’t be there 24 hours a day. He said after he leaves the building about 6 p.m. each day, they come back.
Alcaro said he has spoken with Police Chief Raymond C. Greene about having the school patrolled each hour and fining kids — some of whom aren’t from Sharon — who are caught with skateboards loitering on the property.
Mrs. Corini and Director Kathy Hall said they were harassed on a Sunday by kids with skateboards. Mrs. Corini said they were actually skating through the building, and she asked who they were and told them they had to leave. She said they refused to give their names and said they didn’t have to leave because their parents pay taxes.
The board will vote April 17 on a new policy prohibiting students from using mini-bikes, snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles, roller skates, roller blades or skateboards on school property or as transportation to school.
