SHARON

District explores renovation avenues

Sharon City School Superintendent Richard A. Rossi presented the board Monday with numerous renovation possibilities, including a way to make a separate middle school in the existing building.

“These are just thoughts,” Rossi stressed, adding that he and the architects are still gathering ideas for remodeling the school.

The only definite is the basic $8.5 million for a new roof, asbestos removal, parking lot improvements and changes to make the school compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. School directors have been trying to separate the seventh- and eighth-graders from the high school students without building a separate building. Rossi said if they move the home economics room from the first floor to the third floor, there would be no need for high school students to go to the first floor except to use the cafeteria.

Rossi said they have also been looking at adding two new computer classrooms on the first floor; each would hold 30 computers.

Work will also be done to fix and expand the band parking lot which is bordered by North Meyers Avenue and Alcoma and Linden streets, Rossi said. Director Pamela Corini said the parking lot is too small for the 75 cars that park there, and last year during band camp there were five students who sprained their ankles in the lot.

Rossi said work could begin June 15 and be completed in time for band camp this summer if plans are approved.

In May, the district is going to phase bid work on the school. Rossi said the district will be reimbursed by the state for work on the gym storage area, dressing rooms and elevators in the building. He said they will also phase bid the parking lot but will not be reimbursed for that work.

Finally, a new gym floor is needed in the high school, Rossi said. He said it’s the original floor, and it has seen its last sanding. HHSDR Architects and Engineers, Sharon, are working on estimates for a new floor, he said.

Rossi said he did not yet have cost estimates for the work.
