Westminster College readies for commencement

About 320 students are expected to earn diplomas Saturday during Westminster College’s 146th commencement ceremony.

The 1999-2000 academic year will conclude with a baccalaureate at 10:30 a.m. in Orr Auditorium. Commencement will be at 2:30 p.m. on Old Main’s Senior Terrace.

The Rev. Wayne R. Nickerson, Westminster’s dean of the chapel since 1982, will perform his last ceremony on campus at the baccalaureate service. “What Really Matters,” based on Matthew 6:10, will be his topic.

The Rev. Nickerson conducted Habitat for Humanity student trips to build homes in various states and countries. He also led the annual OxFam Fast, which has raised thousands of dollars. The Rev. Nickerson also conducted the college’s Christmas vespers services.

He and his fiance, Judy Cassis, plan to marry on May 27. They will live in Colorado, where she is a professor at University of North Colorado.

A barbecue on the main quadrangle will follow. Luncheon tickets can be purchased at the door.

Dr. Wende W. Young, founder of the Elizabeth Wende Breast Clinic, Rochester N.Y., will be featured speaker at commencement and will receive an honorary doctorate.

The 1957 Westminster graduate practiced internal medicine at MacDonald Army Hospital in Virginia. She was an assistant diagnostic radiology professor at University of Rochester (N.Y.) School of Medicine before founding the clinic in 1976.

Robert E. Lauterbach, retired board of directors chairman and chief executive officer for Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp., also will speak and receive an honorary doctorate. Since retiring, the 1939 Westminster alumnus established a private consultant business and was chairman of Westminster’s board of trustees. He served in 1981 as Westminster’s interim president.

Robert E. Patton, a 1950 Westminster alumnus, will be a commencement speaker. He also will receive an honorary doctorate.

He is a consultant with Bank Consulting Associates of Pittsburgh and director of Tango Inc. private investment company. Patton graduated in 1953 from Harvard Law School, Cambridge, Mass. In the event of inclement weather, commencement will be in Memorial Field House on campus. Information: 946-7122.
