BROOKFIELD

Police still investigating lancet-poking case

Brookfield police and Trumbull County Juvenile Prosecutor Sean O’Brien will decide whether to charge an eighth-grade Brookfield Middle School girl with assault for allegedly poking seven students with lancets, normally used for drawing blood from a finger.

Patrolman Jay First, who interviewed the students who were stabbed Thursday afternoon, said each one could identify “who did the pokings and where they were poked.”

The students, whose ages range from 12 to 14, were poked in the upper thighs, upper right arm, the small of the back or the buttocks.

Although only one of the stabbings drew blood, police encouraged parents to get the students tested for blood diseases.

“It may have seemed like a kid’s prank, poking other students, but they didn’t realize the seriousness of the crime,” said Detective Ronald Mann.

School officials said two other 14-year-old girls were involved. Police are investigating but said criminal charges wouldn’t be filed.

“At this point, all three girls have been suspended for 10 days, but once the police are finished, we’ll know how to proceed from there,” said Mary Rose Walker, Brookfield Middle School principal.
