Kennedy plans building, class changes

The Kennedy Christian High School Board of Pastors and Erie Diocesan Bishop Donald W. Trautman approved plans last month for a $500,000 renovation at the Hermitage Catholic school.
The focus of the project is replacing a roof that was installed during the school’s 1964 construction. School President Peter Iacino said in a news release there have been no problems with the 50,000-square-foot roof, “but we are living on borrowed time.”
The plans also include one of the last improvements to the outside sports complex — a paved track. The school has already added new baseball, softball and soccer practice fields and improved the football/soccer stadium.
The plans also include the wiring of technologically-needy classrooms, new ceilings and lighting in school hallways, new security-minded entrance doors, refurbished restrooms, and new ceilings and paint in some of the school’s classrooms.
New carpeting, cafeteria furniture, parking-lot lighting and a redesigned chapel area are also planned.
Iacino noted that the project coincides with several approved curriculum changes. The school will offer new courses in its computer program, added elective courses in its art program and enrichment math courses. Science changes are planned but not formalized, Iacino said.
Iacino added that the school’s drama program — under the direction of Joseph Scarvelli — will return after a hiatus.
“Kennedy Christian continues to strive for enhancements and improvements that allow students to be the beneficiaries of the finest Catholic education possible,” Iacino said.
Iacino said half the cost will be financed by area pastors through an increased subsidy. The remaining money will come from the general school budget, he added.
The school will break ground June 1.
