Sports complex costs run close to estimates

The first of a series of Greenville recreation projects came within estimated costs.
Borough council Tuesday awarded contracts after receiving six low bids, totaling $1,559,527, for a six-field youth sports complex on 42 acres in West Salem Township.
Estimates by borough officials and consultants Pashek Associates, Coraopolis,, ranged from $1.5 million to $1.7 million.
The contract for the general site development will go to Marucci and Gaffney, Youngstown. Its $991,000 bid was the lowest of seven.
Other winning contractors were:
Buildings architecture — Anderson Construction, Pymatuning Township, $206,000.
Fencing — Sharon Metal Fence, $49,859.
Site plumbing — William Spaeder and Son, Erie $90,090.
Paving — Totin Construction, Sharpsville, $188,000.
Electrical — George Wagner Electric, Portersville, $34.573.
Work on the sports complex is expected to start about June 1 and finish by the end of this year.
It is the first of a $5.5 million series of recreation projects, which also include a new recreation center, renovations at Greenville Memorial Swimming Pool, and building trails linking downtown Greenville with Riverside Park and the sports complex.
A $2.2 million Governor’s Capital Improvement Fund grant, also known as a stadium fund grant, is funding about half of the recreation projects.
A bond issue, which also is funding a downtown street landscaping project and a new fire station, is funding the local share. Two annual 10-mill tax increases and private contributions will pay back the bond issue loan.
