Water board members get paid

The five Greenville Municipal Authority board members think they should get paid for their efforts and Greenville Council, by a 5-1 vote, agreed to do so.

Council voted to pay each water authority director $100 per month. Councilman Thomas L. McMurdy cast the only vote against paying water authority directors, but he did not give a reason. Councilman Earl Butterfield was absent. Voting for the stipend were councilmen Bryan Shannon, Richard S. Houpt, David Welton, Bryan D. Langiotti and Michael A. D’Alfonso.

It had been more than three years since water authority directors were paid, Peter D. Nicoloff Jr., borough manager, said during an agenda meeting Thursday.

Funding for the directors’ pay will come from the water authority’s operating budget, and not borough coffers, the borough manager said.

Houpt, who was a council liaison to the water authority, said he sat in on authority meetings “during their rough years ... Now, they have a more professional attitude and they are more cooperative.” he said.

Contacted prior to the council meeting, an authority director, Jack M. Dershimer, said the authority board has been meeting four to five times each month. In the past, the authority board met monthly.

“We’re working on problems and getting things straightened out,” Dershimer said.

In 1997, the authority board “donated back” the stipend directors received due to budget constraints, said John Kokoski, authority board president.

The authority’s business practices improved under past board president W. Scott Hodge and authority Superintendent Robert Munch and the authority is no longer under budget constraints, Kokoski said.
