SHARON

Entire town invited to dine out Sunday

By Kristen Garrett

Sharon residents will be treated to a free spaghetti dinner Sunday, compliments of the city of Sharon and some anonymous donors.

Mayor Robert T. Price mentioned the idea of an appreciation dinner in March when the city began promoting Census 2000. Price said the residents have responded well, and he and city council want to thank them.

The dinner will be from 1 to 5 p.m. in Sharon High School cafeteria. Price said the dinner will include salad, spaghetti and meatballs and dessert.

Price said he and city council members will wait on tables and will help with the cleanup. Eric Gonanno, food services director for Sharon City School District, and a few of his staff also will help.

Price said he is hoping about 1,000 residents attend, though he realizes June is a big month for outdoor activities and graduation parties. He said food for 1,000 will be prepared but they are ready to run for more if the crowd is bigger than anticipated.

A shuttle bus will help transport city residents to the dinner, Price said. The bus will begin service at Vermiere Manor on Columbia Avenue at 12:30 p.m. and stop at McDowell Manor and the Quinby Street Service Center. The bus will make the run every half hour.

The expense of the dinner is being covered by donations from community members who want to remain anonymous, Price said. He said there will be drawings every 15 minutes for door prizes donated by local businesses.

As of April 25, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, 71 percent of Sharon’s estimated 17,493 residents had turned in their census forms. Nationally 65 percent of the households have returned their census forms, but enumerators will be going door to door until July.
