A passion for politics has prompted a local lawyer to take a leave of absence from his job to help U.S. Rep. Ron Klink in his bid to unseat U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum.
Mark A. Longietti, a Democrat from Farrell, has worked in the Sharon law firm of Routman, Moore, Goldstone and Valentino since 1989. Since May 15 he has been the 4th District Congressman’s scheduler.
“I really appreciate the support the other members of our law firm have given me for things like this,” Longietti said, adding this is not the first time he has taken a leave to do political work.
In 1995, Longietti said, he took several months off and in 1992 he was a field coordinator for Beaver, Butler and Lawrence counties in the Clinton campaign.
“What draws me to politics is it helps people ... on a large scale,” while the law helps people on an individual basis, Longietti said.
Besides the big picture, Longietti said politics is intriguing because “it’s all or nothing.” He said the work and competition are intense right up until the election.
Longietti’s attraction to politics has kept him going to political events, which is how he said he became acquainted with Klink and his staff. Longietti said from the first time they met, Klink remembered his name and took the time to talk to him. He called Klink a “very genuine person.”
Longietti said as scheduler he sifts through different requests for Klink’s time and schedules his day. In addition, he works with the media and stays in contact with volunteers and gives them information about Klink to help them answer voter questions.
Longietti said he’s not sure what career path he will take after the election. He may return to Sharon and the law firm or he may fill a position on Klink’s staff if he wins.
